Gregory of Tours in his "History of the Franks," bemoans the fact
that the historians who preceded him did not see fit to record the
names of the Kings of the Franks. He quotes Sulpicius Alexander (Book
III of his Historia) and then remarks: "A few pages further on, having
given up all talk of 'duces' and 'regales', he states clearly that the
Franks had a king, but he forgets to tell us what his name was.
"The historians whose works we still have give us all this
information about the Franks, but they never record the names of their
kings. It is commonly siad that the Franks came originally from
Pannonia and first colonized the banks of the Rhine. Then they crossed
the river, marched through Thuringia, and set up in each country
district and each city long-haired kings chosen from the foremost and
most noble family of their race.
Another source writes: Clodio was the Semi-legendary King of the
Salian Franks and father of Merovech, founder of the Merovingian
Dynasty; Called "The Long Hair" because of the length of his hair.
The Merovingians were called the "long Haired Kings" and the cutting of
a king's hair represented his loss of royal power.
According to legend, his father was Pharamond, the first King of the
Salian Franks after the departure of the Romans from Gaul. Clodio
lived in Thuringian Territory and ruled at the same time as the
semi-legendary kings Theudemer and Richemer. All that is known of his
reign is that he took the town of Cambrai from the Romans
