INDEX

[200] Thomas Jr. was born before 1726 as he was of legal age in
1745 when he signed as a witness to a sale of his cousin,
(5) Susannah Meador . He married Ann Bourne, who was the
daughter of Thomas Bourne, brother of the William Bourne who
married (4) Esther Meador. (see chart of this family).
homas received 80 acres of the original 450-acre grant
lands from the will of his father in 1758. This land was
sold by his only son of record, (6) Thomas, to Vincent
Meador in 1787 . At the time it was occupied by Ann
Meador, his mother, but her eventual fate is unknown.
5) Thomas was Executor of his father's will in 1758, along
with his brother Reuben, and they participated in several
court actions over the next few years. He appraised the
estate of John Allen Jr. in 1762 , that of John Reeves in
1768 , and formed a jury to determine the cause of death of
a body found in 1764 . He signed as witness to the will of
his brother-in-law, Ambrose Armstrong, husband of (5) Rachel
Meador, in 1768 , and as a witness to the will of Elizabeth
(Reeves) Allen, widow of John Allen Sr., in 1774 . Less
than two years later he was dead, leaving no will. The
administration of his estate was ordered by the court
February 19,1776, and letters granted to Archibald
Ritchie . No heirs were named, and presumably the son
Thomas mentioned above was his only survivor.
6) Thomas served in the revolution with his cousins,
Vincent and Leroy Meador, enlisting in the 7th Regiment of
the Continental Line. This unit served with General
Washington in New Jersey (see Leroy's record quoted
previously), but as the record of Thomas is not at hand, it
is presently unknown in which campaigns he took part.
6) Thomas was first mentioned in Essex records in the will
of his uncle, (5) Reubin Meador, in 1778, by whom he was
given a gun and wearing apparel . He witnessed the will of
Henry Allen in 1783 and was mentioned as a buyer at the
sale of William Barton that same year . He formed a close
relationship with his cousin, (6) Vincent Meador, son of
William Barton and (5) Elizabeth Meador (?). They are found
as mutual security in several actions of debt in the court
records . And in 1787 he sold the 80 acres inherited from
his father to Vincent Meador. Thomas and Leroy are found in
Amelia County, Virginia in 1796, where they signed as
witnesses for the marriage of Oney Meador, daughter of
Benjamin Meador, to Joshua Noble.
n the census of Virginia of 1810, Thomas and Vincent are
listed together in neighboring King and Queen County, but
are not found in the state census of 1820. In 1810, Thomas
is shown to have been born shortly before 1765, his wife
shortly after, and they have a son and two daughters less
than 10, a son 10 to 16, and two daughters between 16 and
26. The destruction of the records in King and Queen County
prevents us from learning the fate of Thomas Meador.
Vincent, however, is found in Essex County records in 1815,
when an inventory of his property was ordered after his
death . Further descendants are at present writing
unknown.
ote:
he Revolutionary War records of (6) Vincent and (6) Leroy
Meador arrived after the composition of this book. Records
for their cousin, (6) Thomas Meador, have not arrived, but
as all three men enlisted in the same regiment at the same
time, it may be presumed that their service was similar.
hese records show that Vincent and Leroy enlisted in the
company of Capt. John Webb of the 7th Virginia Regiment,
commanded by Col. Alexander McClenachan, on Dec. 29,1776.
This was only three days after the great victory of Gen.
Washington at Trenton, but one cannot say that patriotic
fervor aroused by this victory inspired their enlistments.
They joined the army of Gen. Washington in New Jersey, and
were present during the maneuvers in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania the following spring and summer.
oth men were intermittently absent for some illness which
is not named in the records. Nor do available facts name
them as participants in any of the battles that year, or if
their absence could have been due to wounds. Both men were
recorded as sick and absent during the period from early
September to Oct. 13th, while the Battle of Brandywine was
fought on Sept. 11th, and the Battle of Germantown was
fought on Oct. 4th. In both of these engagements, the
Americans were repulsed, and Gen. Howe, the British
commander, occupied the capitol city of Philadelphia on
Sept. 27th.
oth men were also recorded as sick and absent during the
remaining months of 1777. However, the company muster roll
shows both men were present at Valley Forge, Pa. with
Washington's army during that winter of terrible hardships,
though both men were hospitalized during the month of
January and early February. Both were discharged on Feb.
9,1778. This probably saved their lives, as that winter
3000 men, nearly a fourth of the army, died from the
exposure. Although their enlistment periods were for two
years, the company muster roll states that their times had
expired.
one of the three men lived to collect a pension under the
soldier's pension act of 1832. Vincent's name is on a list
of those for whom no bounty land had been claimed by 1834.
He had died in 18
