[452] Gregory of Tuurs writes:
In this same year (580 A.D.), the Christians in Spain suffered sad
persecution. Many of them were driven into exile, deprived of their
possessions, weakened by hunger, thrown into prison, beaten with sticks
and tortured to death. The chief instigator of this horror was
Goiswinth, the widow of King Athanagild, whom leuvigild later married.
This woman who had brought such humiliation to God's servants was
herself the victim of divine vengeance, for whe was branded as infamous
before all peoples. W white cataract blinded one of her eyes, and in
this way her elye-lids lost the sense which had long before departed
from her mind.
{Leuvigild's son by a former wife married Ingund, the daughter of King
Chilperic of Soissons.] Goiswinth received her very warmly, but it was
soon apparent that she had no intention of allowing her to remain a
Catholic. She talked with her in a kindly way, and tried to persuade
her to be rebaptized into the Arian heresy. Ingund had the courage to
refuse. 'It is quite enough for me that I have been cleanses once and
for all from original sin by a baptism which will save my soul, and
that I have made clear my belief in the Holy Trinity one and
indivisible,' she said. 'I hereby confirm that I believe this with all
my heart and that I will never go back on this article of faith.'
hen she heard this, the Queen lost her temper completely. She seized
the girl by the hair and threw her to the ground: then she kicked her
until she was covered with blood, had her stripped naked and ordered
her to be thrown into the baptismal pool. There are many witnesses who
can tell how Ingund refused to budge an inch from the faith which we

INDEX

[271] That William Meador was born before 1706-7 can be deduced
from the fact that he made a legal deed in 1728 . This
tract was part of the 450-acre grant, which had passed from
(1) Thomas to (2) Thomas to (3) John to (4) Richard, then
inherited by (5) William. In this deed, William sold the
150 acres which had been given to Hope Meador to Henry
Reeves, Jr.. It was never again owned by the Meador family.
nother 70-acre portion of the 450-acre grant sold by
William to his uncle, (4) Thomas Meador, in 1734 . In this
deed for that transaction, the succession of ownership from
William's great-grandfather, (2) Thomas Meador, is
recounted, making the family lineage very clear.
illiam Meador married Francis Phitzsimmons, as indicated by
the will of her mother, Mary Phitzsimmons, in 1756 . In
her will Mary designated that her lands were to be divided
between her two daughters, Frances Meador and Mary
Faulconer, with William Meador named as executor. Mary also
named two grandchildren, Rachel and Jeremiah Meador.
William and Frances were first mentioned together in 1738
when they assigned their rights to the remaining 100 acres
of the lands of Richard White to John Bourne . That tract
had been left by the will of (4) Richard to his son, (5)
Richard, younger brother of William.
illiam Meador appears in many other court records in Essex
County. He served on a jury in 1727; he was appointed
Constable in 1736; and was appointed as Surveyor in 1739.
Also in 1739 he witnessed the will of William Bourne , who
was his uncle through marriage to his aunt, (4) Esther
Meador. William appraised the estate of Mary Davis in
1741 , and is named on a list of those paying poll tax for
the same year . He is mentioned in various court actions
from 1745 to 1754. He witnessed the will of his uncle (5)
Thomas Meador in 1758. William Meador died in 1759. No
will was recorded, but an inventory of his estate was filed
December 17,1759 . His property included one slave, Abram,
valued at 25 pounds, for a total of 75 pounds sterling.
illiam's wife, Frances Phitzsimmons Meador, lived until
January 2,1770. She made no written will, but at the last
moment on her deathbed called in Jane Meador, wife of (5)
Reubin Meador, who took testimony as to her wishes .
Through this non-cupative will we learn the names of three
more of the children of William and Frances Meador. Two
daughters, Sary (Sarah) and Elizabeth were to divide her
estate. Her "youngest son Leroy" was to receive a chest
which had been his father's.
n court records beginning in 1754, there are several
references to a William Meador, Senior (evidently (5)
William) and to a William Meador, Junior . The dates of
these references would seem to indicate that William,
Junior, was born before 1733. Unfortunately, because the
terms Senior and Junior were frequently used for an
uncle/nephew relationship as well as for father and son, the
term is not definitive. It is believed that the younger
William could have been the son of (5) Richard, and thus a
nephew of William, as will be discussed later.
he only child of (5) William who is mentioned in other
records in Essex County is (6) Leroy Meador, who in 1775
witnessed the will of his uncle, (5) Richard Meador. Leroy
then enlisted in Capt. John Webb's Company of the 7th
Regiment of the Virginia Colonial Line on December 29,1776.
He joined General Washington in New Jersey shortly after the
battle of Trenton. However, he was taken ill, and for the
next months was frequently in and out of the hospital. He
was with General Washington at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania
during the terrible winter of 1777-1778. The conditions
were evidently too harsh for a man in his weakened state, as
he was again hospitalized and finally discharged on February
9,1778. It is unknown if he actually saw any comb
