[18] Statement of Lisa Meadows Garfield:
"My grandfather, John Schuyler Meadows, is in possession of the
original "History of the Wimbish Family, " written by John S. Wimbish,
Sr. on November 1, 1918, in Macon, Georgia. I have a copy of the
history. Beginning on page 7, John S. Wimbish briefly chornicles his
family. This extract concerns his fifth child, Mary Alice Wimbish, who
is my great-grandmother:
'5. Mary Alice Wimbish was born on the 8th of May, 1873. In
February, 1900 she was married to S. Grant Meadows. They are the
parents of three children, all boys - Wilbur, Schuyler and Harvey.
They are living in Tampa, Florida. Wilbur is married and has two
children now.'
"Notes: Schuyler Grant Meadows and Mary Alice Wimbish also had a
little girl, Sarah Margaret Meadows, born May 11, 1918 in Tampa, Fla,
who died on January 27, 1922.
"My grandfather, John S. Meadows, has always given me the date of
March 30, 1900, as the marriage date of his parents, not February."
Regarding the confusion about the marriage date of Schuyler Grant
Meadows and Mary Alice Wimbish, see notes of Leila Elizabeth McRae.
tatement of Margie Meadows Phillips:
Schuyler Grant was my grandfather, the father of my father John Schuyler
(3/23/03 - 9/28/88). As I have recently discovered, he was also the
grandfather to a number of other people unknown to me or to my brother,
Alan Schuyler. This is how the tale unfolds which is certainly
interesting
to me and hopefully will be of interest to Schuyler Grant's
descendants.
s I knew him, Schuyler Grant was a Methodist minister. He had pastored
the Riverview, Florida Methodist Church and other churches around
central
Florida. When I knew him, he was retired and preached in Central
Florida
churches as a pulpit supply minister.
e was a wonderful man, respected in the community and preached fiery
sermons accompanied by pounding on the pulpit to make his points. When
he prayed, it was lengthy and sometimes another sermon. He was tall and
lean with gray hair and a handsome gray mustache. He taught the adult
Sunday school class at Riverview church when I was growing up there and
I remember during the service at prayer time, he always rested his head
on his arms on the pew in front of him.
chuyler Grant (he was called Grant) lived with my Granny (Mary Alice
Wimbish) in a white frame house on Highway 301 in Riverview exactly
across from the Riverview School. Behind the house was a magnificient
garden
which with his nurturing care produced enough fresh vegetables to
supply many
friends and relatives. Half a mile down the road was his orange and
grapefruit grove. He tended it by pruning, hoeing around each tree and
fertilizing at the proper time. He was a very hard worker in his
fields, toiling from dawn to dusk. He was an equally hard worker in
God's fields, nurturing and harvesting people for Jesus Christ.
fter Granny (Mary Alice) died in 1944, Grandpa went to live with his
youngest son, Harvey who lived on highway 301 also, just a quarter of
a mile away with a field between the two homes. Alice Devane, Harvey's
wife, faithfully cared for Grandpa along with her children for many
years. When their family would go on vacation, Grandpa would stay with
us. He later moved in and lived with us (his son Schuyler and Doris,
my mother).
few of my memories of "life with grandpa" when I was a teenager and
he lived with us: He teased me a great deal about all the crazy things
my friends and I were doing. He especially liked to talk about my red
fingernail polish. (I don't think he approved.) He and I were always
in charge of washing the dinner dishes. We always had a discussion
about who was to wash and who was to dry. He insisted on washing
because it was the harder job and he wanted to be sure and do his fair
share around the house.
e always prevailed and did the washing and I had the easy job of
drying, except some of them had to be dried extra good or rewashed in
the morning by my mother. Sunday dinner was served right after church.
It was usually pot
roast or fried chicken. When it was chicken, he insisted on having the
wing and the neck. Those, of course, were not the choice pieces and
I'm sure
he took them to save the best for others. Humbling himself was his way
of
life!
He always had the honors for saying the Sunday blessing of the food and
it
frequently cooled down considerably while he spoke to God and enumerated
all our blessings , aked forgiveness for all our sins, pleaded for
ourcauses and
praised the name of God. A true Methodist prayer!
randpa had asthma and I remember many a time hearing from his bedroom,
his cough that went on and on.

After being away at college and then living in Tampa, I met and
married
Wayne Phillips. My best and final memory of Grandpa was him joining the
pastor of the Riverview church to perform our wedding ceremony. By
then, he was ninety years old. He used a cane and chose to sit during
his part
of the ceremony. He began by giving Wayne and I specific advice on many
aspects of married life. As I recall, he especially admonished Wayne
about many
things. The only thing I really remember that he said was "never let
the sun
set on your anger."
randpa died the following year shortly after becoming a
great-grandfather to our daughter Stacia. (He was already a
great-grandfather to his son Wilbur's children).
ntil two weeks ago, I didn't know that he was already grandfather and
great-grandfather to a whole other set of children. This is how it
unfolds.
y brother, Alan, while visiting with a lifelong friend of ours from
Riverview days, Jim Ralston, was told by Jim that our grandfather,
Schuyler Grant, had been previously married up in Georgia. Jim said
that our
grandfather worked for his grandfather in his grove around the turn of
the century and that everybody in town knew something about that family
in
Georgia. Alan and I had heard a vague possibility of this about three
years ago when some of our family genealogy experts had mentioned it to
us.
We dismissed it and thought no more about it until Jim brought it up.
Jim
was hesitant to talk about it thinking that perhaps we didn't know and
shouldn't know.
ow, hang in there with me for the details. Jim, Alan and I had all
known a man named Harley Tompkins as young adults. My father,
Schuyler, was an electrical contractor. Harley called on my father
during the course of his selling electrical supplies and they became
friends. Consequently, Harley became a friend of Alan, Jim Ralston
and me. We socialized quite a bit in those days and Harley came to
know Grandpa (Schuyler Grant).
t that time, Harley told Jim that his mother had been a Meadows and that
Schuyler Grant was her father and his grandfather. Well, of course,
that
made our friend, Harley, our cousin! Why Harley never told our father
(Schuyler) we don't know. We have discovered that Harley died several
years ago so we couldn't pursue it with him.
he fascinating part and the part that we would all like to understand
is what happened in those years of 1889 - 1901. As we understand it,
Schuyler Grant was a Methodist preacher serving a church in Eastman,
Georgia.
He was married to Leila Elizabeth McRae in 1889 and they had four
daughters.
Some say that Leila had mental problems and was in a hospital for that
reason.
e, at this point, don't know if this was before or after the
occurrence of
Schuyler Grant leaving her for another woman. There was a great
scandal.
The woman was the choir director or pianist at his church. We are
assuming
that the woman was Mary Alice ( who was the mother of Wilbur, Schuyler,
Harvey and Margaret) and my grandmother. S. Grant then had to leave
the church
and the Methodist conference.
e went to Florida and farmed and worked (which is apparently where Jim
Ralston's grandfather comes into the picture). In 1901, Leila,
committed suicide and the four daughters were left to be raised by her
sister. It is also said that Leila's uncles and brothers came to
Florida and threatened him with his life if he ever attempted to make
contact with them.
anting to discover as much as we could about this other family (which
is
called family 1 on the genealogy charts), Jim helped us contact
Harley's
brother-in-law, Floyd Blair , who was married to Lucy, Harley's sister,
who
is now deceased. Floyd immediately contacted Leila Gustafson, Lucy and
Harley"s sister. Leila and I talked on the phone and were delighted to
discover that we shared the same grandfather and we made arrangements
to get together.
n order to have as much family history as I could before meeting with
Leila, I found out that practically everyone in our family knew this
deep, dark scandalous secret except my brother, Alan and I. My Aunt
Alice
(Harvey,s wife) said that Grandpa told Harvey and Schuyler when they
were adults
because he thought they might hear it from others. Exactly what he told
them is unknown to me. When I asked Aunt Alice why no one told us, she
said
people didn't talk about things like that and she wasn't inclined to
elaborate.
then discovered that we have three family members who are into
genealogy and they had this piece of information by virtue of looking
for documents
that were elusive.
