William Bryant was orphaned at a young age and was bound out to a Mr.
Winn who was a hard taskmaster. Becoming dissatisfied, William ran
away to Houston County. He was married to Rebecca Chambless of South
Carolina and they settled in Bibb County where they lived until 1851 at
which time he moved to Fulton County. He bought land lot 196 on Sept
16, 1848 from E. M. Poole and Gideon Brown, record of which is in
Dekalb County deed records. He bought land lots 197 and 198 on Sept.
11, 1849 from J.J. Thrasher and later bought 100 acres from Soloman
Pratt totaling his acreage to 707.5 acres. Before his death he gave
each of his living children 50 acres as their share of his estate.
Thirteen children were born to this family, nine of which had families.
William owned slaves and when the Northern troops were near his home,
he refugeed to Monroe County in two horse wagons driving his sheep and
cattle in herds to his relative, John Chambless' home where he stayed
until the war was over. When he returned after the war he found his
home had been cut down by Sherman's army. He rebuilt his home at the
intersection of Dodson Drive and Chattahoochee Avenue. He and his wife
are both buried in Utoy Baptist Churchya
