[193] From the book "Our Colonial Meador Ancestors" by Victor Paul Meadors:
"One of the best documented children of (3) John Meador is
his second son, Thomas Meador. In large part this is due to
the details left by Thomas in his will. The limited
remaining facts on his surviving children have been the
subject of many interpretations by erudite fellow
genealogists. Careful study of these records has added
little additional knowledge of this family.
"While the order of birth of the children of (3) John Meador
cannot be determined, Thomas was certainly born in the
1680's. Seemingly he was named after his grandfather, (2)
Thomas Meador. He is first mentioned in the deed of gift
that his father made in 1694 to the children of his first
marriage . In that division of property, Thomas was given
a portion bounded by the Cold Spring, the Great Branch
(which also bounded the property given to Richard and John
Jr.) and the main run of Hoskins Creek. (see map). The
land given to Thomas was probably 100 acres, as this was the
amount noted on the rent (tax) roll in 1715. The property
remained in the possession of Thomas and his descendants for
nearly a hundred years.
"Thomas married Elizabeth Wood sometime before 1718, when
Elizabeth and her brothers John and Thomas Wood disposed of
some of the property they had inherited . She is not
mentioned again in records until 1734, when she was witness
to a deed. She apparently did not survive her husband.
"Thomas was named as a potential beneficiary of one-fourth of
the estate of his brother, (4) John Jr., in his will in
1720 , of which Thomas was also named Executor (a task that
occupied over 20 years). But there is no indication that
Thomas of the others named in that will ever became actual
beneficiaries of John Jr.'s estate. The deed of gift by (3)
John had specified that the lands given should return to the
father for disposal if the recipient should die; but it is
seen that the property given to John Jr. is in the hands of
(5) Richard, son of (4) Richard, the oldest brother, who had
already passed away in 1716. Records are lacking to support
the actual transfer of ownership, but perhaps the rules of
primogeniture then in effect resulted in this succession of
ownership. In any case, it would appear that Thomas did not
receive the inheritance from (4) John Jr. as specified in
the will.
"When (3) John died in 1721 , Thomas was the only son of the
first marriage of John who still survived. (4) Richard, (4)
John Jr., and (4) Hope Meador had already deceased, and
apparently his sister, (4) Esther Bourne, had already died
as well. But by John's second marriage four more sons had
been added to the family, and John's will acknowledged this
fact by providing that "my five sons shall keep their own
guns".
"Jonas Meador, oldest of the sons by John's second wife,
received a small piece of the land still retained by John,
while the rest was divided equally among the four other
surviving sons. This obviously included (4) Thomas, who
received also one shilling as a token bequest. It is not
clear how such land Thomas received from this divided
bequest, nor just where it was located. Of all the lands
obtained by (3) John Meador through inheritance, by gift, or
by purchase or grants, there may be some 90 acres or so
unaccounted for in the deed of gift of 1694. If so, this
may have been the land divided by his will among the five
sons then surviving.
"Numerous records over the next 35 years attest to Thomas
Meador's activities in signing inventories, wills, and
appraisals. There are too numerous to list. But in 1743 he
was named by his niece, (5) Susannah Meador (daughter of
John Jr.) to oversee her inheritance . (see the next
chapter). Also, he was named Executor of the estate of
Richard Armstrong on 1751 , a duty which he refused .
"In 1734 Thomas purchased 70 acres of the original 450-acre
grant from his nephew, (5) William Meador . Then in 1739
he purchased from his sister, (4) Rachel Jordan, and William
Hutson (both of Caroline County) the 105 acres left to her
by their father, (3) John Meador . This tract had been
purchased by John from Edwin Thacker in 1687. The acreage
was then divided in half and Thomas sold one half to William
Allen . Ten years later, the sale of this portion of John
Clements by Zachariah Allen, son of William, was
acknowledged by Thomas Meador .
"Thomas died in 1758, and his detailed will was probated
September 19,1758 (see copy). In it, he names four sons
and five daughters: John, Thomas, Ambrose, Reuben, Sarah,
Easter (Esther), Elizabeth, Rachel, and Frances. Three of
these sons, John, Thomas, and Reuben, were willed portions
of the plantation lands, and the daughters received a
feather bed apiece. Only Ambrose was accorded no bequest,
other than an equal share in the personal property. There
was no explanation. From this will, we learn that the
"burying place" was on the portion given to Reuben. The
personal estate left by Thomas included 4 slaves, 5 cows, 2
horses, 40 barrels of corn, sheep, hogs, and a fiddle .
"WILL OF THOMAS MEADOR
