When John Thomas was 21 years old, he went to Monroe County and worked
for Tom Chambless. He joined the Confederate Army in the spring of
1861 at Forsyth, GA, and served under Capt. Etheridge in the 14th GA Co
A until the close of the war. He was at Appomattox, VA, when Gen.
Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Grant. After the war, he returned to
Fulton County where he married Marthena Marchman on Dec 2, 1869. He
built a home on the fifty acres given him by his father. He later
bought his sister Nancy Rowan's fifty acres and at the close of his
father's estate, he bought the remaining 50 acres. There were 6
children born to this family. His wife died May 22, 1889. On May 4th,
1893, he married Mrs. Janie Betterton, four children being born to this
family. He was a prosperous farmer
