It is conjectured that John's second wife, Miss Awbrey/Aubrey, was his
step-sister, daughter of Henry Awbrey/Aubrey, and that this was the
foundation for a family rift.
n terms of wealth, the children of (3) John Meador by his
second wife received little from their father; the children
by his first wife, Elizabeth White, having already received
the bulk of John's estate. Whether due to the law of
Primogeniture or not, the oldest son, (4) Richard, and his
descendants appear to have ultimately obtained much of
John's total estate.
n terms of prestige and political influence in the
community, (3) John Meador does not appear to have been
outstanding; but rather to have been just an average
citizen. While he presumably should have been benefitted
from his relationship to the Awbreys and Gouldmans (both
influential families), there is little indication that he
was treated favorably by either family. The family of
Elizabeth (White) Meador also appear to have been
influential and wealthy, through her father, Richard White.
On the other hand, (3) John's second wife does not appear to
have been from an influential family.
erhaps as a result of both these factors, together with the
age of (4) Richard Meador, Richard and his descendants
tended to dominate others of the family and particularly
those of the second marriage. The scattering of these
latter children and their failure to take any significant
advantage of the small amount of land left to them by (3)
John may well have been directly attributable to that
dominance by (4) Richard and his children. This could have
been accentuated by their Quaker leanings. They could only
seek fortunes elsewhere.
s noted elsewhere, there must certainly be other
descendants of (3) John Meador who are not chronicled in
Essex County records, who are later found in Cumberland,
Price Edward, and Amelia Counties. It is to be hoped that
further research in these areas will finally establish the
missing links to these lineages.
onas Meador was born in Essex County, Virginia and died in
Cumberland County, Virginia. The children were born in
Essex or Caroline County. The three Holloways were children
of John Holloway and Hannah Spiers. James Holland was the
son of John Holland and Jane Bond. Sarah Atkinson was the
daughter of Samuel Atkinsin and wife Mary Ann. Parentage of
the other has not been established.
5) Jesse served in the American Revolution in the Minute
Men from Amelia County. (6) Josiah Jr. served three
enlistments totalling 1 year 11 months. Three sons of (5)
Joel served together from Bedford County about 6 months
apiece; these were (6) Jonas, (6) Isham, and (6) Joel Meador
Jr..
ason was born in Essex County, Virginia. He followed
family members to Caroline, Amelia, and Bedford Counties in
Virginia, before going to South Carolina in 1760 with the
Moberlys. The five marriages shown were all to children of
Edward Moberly and Susannah DeRuel; Edward was a son of
William Moberly and Phoeba Lovejoy, who lived in Portobago,
Maryland. Jason Jr., Job and Thomas Huntley all served in
the Revolutionary W
