INDEX

[205] Before she was mentioned in the will of her father, (4)
Thomas Meador, nothing is known of Elizabeth. She was
probably born in the 1730's. In the will in 1758 she was
named as the wife of Benjamin Allen, and was willed a
feather bed and furniture.
enjamin Allen was the son of Erasmus Allen and Dinah
Waggoner. (see the family charts). His age is not of
record, but because he appraised the estate of John
Armstrong in 1748 , it is presumed that he was born before
1727. He signed inventories in 1751 and in 1763 . His
parentage is established through a court action over the
slaves left by his father, which case he cost(?) . But in
this record it is noted that he paid an Elizabeth Allen to
appear as witness; that this was not his wife is noted
below.
enjamin died in 1765, but left no will, and his passing was
noted only by the abatement, through his death, of further
pursuit of his case against Elizabeth Allen . No records
have been found connecting him with Elizabeth Meador except
for the will of her father.
he Elizabeth Allen of the court actions was Elizabeth
Reeves Allen, daughter of Henry Reeves (II?) (see chart of
the Reeves family). It has been generally accepted that the
will of an Elizabeth Allen in 1774 was that of Elizabeth
Meador. This is not true. Elizabeth Reeves became the
second wife of John Allen, a brother of Benjamin, as can be
established through numerous court actions of record. She
was the administrator of her husband's estate , as John
Allen died intestate in 1750. She was named guardian of her
four minor children , who are well documented through the
long and bitter court actions over their inheritance, which
continued through the courts for many years following .
Two of these children, Henry and Tanzia(?) Allen, she named
in her will. Henry Reeves and his children were close
neighbors of the Meadors. In fact, Henry Reeves (III)
bought from (5) William Meador in 1728 the 150 acres left to
(4) Hope Meador by his father, (3) John Meador . The
Reeves family seems to have been quite affluent, and
Elizabeth (Reeves) Allen not only sold 250 acres of land ,
but also died possessed of three other large tracts . That
she could not have been the wife of Benjamin Allen appears
obvious.
oon after the death of Benjamin Allen. Elizabeth Meador
became the consort of William Barton, for whom she bore a
son, (6) Vincent Meador. She then married Barton and bore
him two more sons, John Barton and Thomas Barton. William
Barton died intestate in 1783; appraisal of his estate was
ordered by the court January 20,1783 and the division of
his estate, principally slaves, proceeded with unusual
rapidity . In this division , Elizabeth as widow received
the equivalent of 94 pounds sterling, and Vincent, John, and
Thomas shared equally in the amount of 61 pounds each, which
worked out to be approximately two slaves apiece. Nothing
further has yet been found of the fate of Elizabeth
Meador/Allen/Barton.
6) Vincent Meador was born about 1765, and served in the
Revolutionary War along with a cousin, (6) Leroy Meador, in
the 7th Virginia Regiment of the Colonial Line . His name
also appears on a list of Revolutionary soldiers for whom no
bounty land had been claimed by 1734 .
incent developed a close relationship with his cousin, (6)
Thomas Meador, and they joined in several court cases in
1785 to 1787 , in some of which Vincent was security for
Thomas. This seems to have been a closer relationship than
Vincent had with his own brothers, as John Barton took
Vincent to court for debt . In 1787, Thomas sold his home
plantation to Vincent, upon which Ann Meador was still
living , possibly to settle his obligations. Vincent then
sold his property to John Johnston, of the Richard Meador
lineage . I would appear that his 75 or 80 acres was part
of the original 450-acre grant lands. Thus yet another
portion of these ancestral lands was removed forever from
the possession of the Meador family.
articipating in this last deed was Sarah, the wife of
Vincent. No further deeds in Essex County have been found.
In the 1810 census of King and Queen County Vincent is found
living close to his cousin, Thomas Meador. The census
credits Vincent with two sons, one less than 10 and the
other 10 to 16, and three daughters, two less than 10 and
one 16 to 26. Not all of these children are presently
known; the loss of King and Queen records prevents us from
ascertaining their names. This fact also probably precludes
the preservation of his will, if any. The only available
record of Vincent's death is found in a court order in Essex
County that his personal property should be inventoried, in
1815 .
owever, through another source, we can largely reconstruct
this family. One son of Vincent is known, (7) Barton
Meador. The only record of Barton is his will, which was
entered in Essex County records in 1838 . In this will,
Barton names two sisters, Elizabeth Hammonds and Catherine
Brookes, and a nephew, Vincent Gordon. While the marriage
of Elizabeth is not of record, with the aid of marriage
records of Essex County , it is seen that (7) Catherine
Meador married first to Alexander Dunn January 17,1825, who
died in 1835 , then married secondly to Edmund Brookes on
December 19,1836. Their children are at present unknown.
(7) Frances Meador married George Gordon January 1,1828, and
the only child known is the (8) Vincent Gordon mentioned
above, who married Virginia McTyre June 11,1853.
arriage records for two more Meador/Meadows girls in Essex
County are in evidence, but the relationship has not been
established. These are Nancy Meador, who married John
Greenstreet May 23,1811, and Clara Meadows, who married
William G. Haile April 4,1828. It is possible that these
last two girls could be of the lineage of (6) Richard
Meador, whose children are unknown. These families have not
been traced further at this writing.
6) Thomas Barton married Hannah Jones, daughter of Erasmus
Jones , Hannah died in 1807, and Thomas followed in 1809,
leaving one daughter, Elizabreth Barton , who was under 21
in 1807. In his will Thomas left one-third of his slaves to
daughter Elizabeth, and the land that he had purchase of (6)
Richard Meador he ordered sold to pay his debts. The bulk
of his estate was given to Sally Ferrel, daughter of Edmund
Ferrel, and to her two illegitimate children by him, a
daughter named Polly Ferrel and a child yet unborn. They
were to be maintained on his plantation for life.
6) John Barton died before 1823 , no descendants are yet
