Elizabeth Meador evidently was named after her mother,
Elizabeth White. She was still a small child in 1694 when
her father gave her half of the 300 acres on the north side
of Hoskins Creek that had been the plantation of her
grandfather, Richard White.
efore the death of her father in 1721, she had married John
Armstrong. The evidence for this is indirect---her father
referred to her in his will as Elizabeth Armstrong; her
brother, (4) John Meador Jr., in his verbal will of 1720 ,
made bequests to his brother, (4) Thomas Meador, and to what
appears to be his three brothers-in-law, including John
Armstrong.
that probably adjoined that of the Richard White plantation.
He is named as a neighbor to (4) Esther Meador and William
Bourne . Not long before his death, John sold this land
(100 acres) to his brother, Richard Armstrong .
lizabeth Meador certainly was dead by the time John
Armstrong on his deathbed ordered his entire estate sold and
turned into cash for distribution to his heirs and
debtors , making no provision for a widow. Witness to
these dying wishes was his son, (5) Ambrose Armstrong;
another possible son was John Armstrong, a minor, who was
remanded to the guardianship of Mary Dix . The estate of
John Armstrong was administered by his brother, Richard
Armstrong, and by (5) William Meador .
5) Ambrose Armstrong married his first cousin, (5) Rachel
Meador, daughter of (4) Thomas Meador. This is stated in
the will of Thomas in 1758 . They had at least two
children. A daughter, (6) Rachel Armstrong, is named as the
daughter of Ambrose in the will of Frances (Phitzsimmons)
Meador, wife of (5) William Meador . A son, (6) Thomas,
was executor of his father's will. However, the surviving
widow was not Rachel, but named Elizabeth .
he will of Ambrose, presented for probate in 1768, named
only "wife and five young children" . Therefore, it is
impossible to ascertain the exact number of children, or how
many Ambrose had by each wife. The family disappears from
Essex County recor
