[232] Listed in the 1840 Federal Census for Hillsborough County, Florida.
ancy C., or "Nannie," is the author of the following letter:
March 30, 1874
ear Cousin,
seat myself to write you a few lines, though under the circumstances
it is rather a hard task for me to perform; though I expect you have
heard the sad new of your Father's death' but I feel it my duty to
write and tell you (as near as I can) as I thought it would be a
satisfaction to you to know all about it.
e died Thursday morning just before daylight, went to bed that night
well as usual., rested very well till the latter part of the night he
got up (as he had been in the habit of doing for a long time) made a
fire and smoked his pipe as usual. Aunt Louisa got up and asked him if
he was sick. He said he was not, only had cramp in his feet (as he
frequently had). She wanted to rub them but he said they were getting
better, and they had better lie down again as he wanted an early
breakfast; so they lay down and Auntie went to sleep. When she woke
again the fowls were crowing and she thought it was time to get up; but
Uncle told her it was too soon to get up that it was an hour or two
till day; while she was lying there she heard him cough and make a
strange noise like he was strangled. She called him and asked what was
the matter but he did not answer so she got up and put her hand on him,
asked again, but he did not answer, so she rant to the fire that was
still glimmering on the hearth, threw on a piece of wood and it made a
bright light. In a few minutes she ran back to the bedside to raise
him up, but saw he was dying. She called George and told him to run
there, that she believed his Papa was dying. The little fellow ran in,
but they could do nothing for him as the breath had left him. George,
poor little fellow, ran to Mr. Hay's and got him to come and let us
know. Father and the girls went as fast as they could. Aunt Lou had
closed his eyes, poor creature, she takes it very hard. We are all
satisfied that she has discharged her duty as an affectionate wife to
your Father.
izzie, I know you will want to know something about his burial. He was
buried very nicely. Father got a nice pair of pants (black) also a
nice pair of socks. he could not get a ready made coat but he got some
nice black alpaca and the girls made him a very nice coat. he was
buried in the shirt you gave him. Father got bleaching to line and
black to cover the coffin. The coffin was a very nice one.
e was buried at the new Alafia Church. Bro. Giles performed the burial
services. There was a large crowd at the burial, considering nearly
all the men in the country were summoned to Tamp and was from home at
the time, though there was men enough to do the work with perfect ease,
although it was a terrible shock to everybody, it was so sudden. We
have not spoken to Auntie about having his funeral preached, though I
expect she would prefer having it preached at the church where he was
buried, as it will be more convenient for her to get there than
anywhere else, as she will have a bad change to go any distance. I
will write to you again when I find out.
think Aunt Lou will stay on her little place and try to get along the
best she can, though her prospects look gloomy at present.
ell Lizzie, I have told you all the particulars as near as I could.
Aunt Lou and the children were here yesterday but I was gone to church
and did not see them. They were all well. This leaves all well as
usual hoping it will find yourself and little family in good health.
Father, Mother and the girls all join me in love to you and family.
Please answer by letter and let me know how you are all getting along.
I remain your affectionate cousin -
signed) Nannie (C or E) Pearce
his is a true and complete copy of a letter written by Nannie Pearce to
her cousin, Mrs. Lizzie Pearce Hilliard. The letter describes the
death of the Rev. Levi Pearce, brother of Nannie's own father, John
Pearce, married to Mary Mizell Pearce.
oth Pearce families were then residing in the old Pleasant Grove
community in Hillsborough County.
opies of the letter were made February 20, 1953 from the original
letter in possession of Mr. Charles Wesley Pearce of Arcadia, FL. He
is the "little Charlie," the baby mentioned therein as the "little
family."
here are some who say that Nannie may have been "Fannie" and that there
were five girls in the family of John Pearce and Mary Mizell Pearce,
but, it is clear from the census record that a "Nancy C. Pearce"
existed, thus we may assume that this letter was written by sa

[284] It is believed that during her confinement for delivery of this last
child of Edward II, Isabelle came into contact with Roger de Mortimer
who was, at the time, incarcerated in the Tower for rebellion and
revolt against the king's "favorite," Hugh DeSpenser. There is even
some conjecture that Isabelle helped Roger to escape from the Tower,
from whence he fled to France, where she met him later before returning
with him to England to depose her husband and take control of England
as "regent" in fact, if not in na
