Enoch E. Collins, Sr. was born either in South Carolina or, according
to noted Florida Historian, Albert DeVane, in Effingham County,
Georgia. He was brought as a boy by his parents to Tattnall County,
Georgia, and grew up there. He moved as a young unmarried man to
Lowndes County, Georgia where he met and married Fatima Knight,
daughter of Methodist preacher, Samuel and his wife Mary Roberts
Knight. Enoch and Fatima had fifteen children, four of whom died in
infancy.
Enoch was a farmer and moved with his wife's family to Alachua
County, Florida in 1844, where Enoch and Fatima stayed, though her
family moved further south to Hillsborough County. Fatima died in
Alachua County in 1846.
Enoch then married Elizabeth Guthrie, daughter of Samuel Guthrie.
They had five children. Elizabeth died soon after the birth of her
fifth child. After her death, Enoch moved to Hillsborough County to be
near his children who had moved to Hillsborough County to be near their
grandparents. Enoch settled near Plant City in the Dover area, then
called Collinstown. Many Collins descendants still reside in the Plant
City area.
Enoch next married an 18 year old widow, Mrs. Temperance Starling
Haywood. They had nine children, making Enoch the father of 29
children, most of whom survived to adulthood.
Enoch farmed and raised cattle until his death in 1877 and
continued to increase his land holdings, becoming quite prosperous.
Enoch served several enlistments in the Indian Wars in South
Georgia and in Florida. He was a private in Capt. David R. Bryan's
Company of Lowndes County Militia in 1838, and was in Capt. J.S.
Sparkman's company of the Florida Militia in 1849
