Notes from "Mills County, Iowa, 1985" published by Mills County History
Book Committee, Library of Congress Number 85-63076:
The Andrew Cole family came to Mills County, Iowa from McDonough
County, Illinois in the year 1866. They settled on a farm just east of
Glenwood. Andrew lived here until his death on December 27, 1874.
ndrew was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, near Zanesville, on October
16, 1813, a sixth generation in America. His father was Samuel Cole,
born in Pennsylvania in 1765; his mother, Rachel Welsh, was born in
Pennsylvania in 1783. Andrew was the seventh child in a family of
nineteen children, nine boys and ten girls. The parents are buried in
the Muskingum Presbyterian Church yard, also a number of the children.
ndrew was married on December 31, 1835, to Elizabeth Hennon, daughter
of James Hennon and Ossee DeWitt. There were seven children in the
family, all born in Ohio.
n 1857 the family moved by covered wagon from Ohio to McDonough County,
Illinois where they lived for nine years before coming to Glenwood in
1866.
ndrew Cole died December 27, 1874 and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery.
His estate was divided among his children. His wife Elizabeth spent
her remaining years among the chidlren until her death at her
daughter's home in council Bluffs, Iowa on August 14, 1904 at age 97.
he first member of this Cole family line to come to America was Barent
Jocobzen Kool, born in Amsterdam, Holland about 1610. He came to this
country about 1630 as an officer in the service of the West India
Company. He settled in New Amsterdam, New York, was a member of the
Dutch Reformed Church which later became a Presbyterian Church and is
now the Marble Collegiate Church in new York City. Succeeding
generations of Kools-Cools migrated to southern new York, thence to
Sussex County, New Jersey, and then into Pennsylvania where Andrew was
born.
t is interesting to note that Holland had no letter C in its alphabet
in those early years so Cole was spelled Kool. As the name
becameAanglicized the spelling was changed to the English spelling
