Little is known about Reuben Meador, third son of (4) Thomas
Meador. The first mention of his name in Essex County
records is in 1755, when he presented a bill for returning a
negro slave .
he only indication of his possible age comes from the fact
that, along with his brother Thomas, he was named Executor
of his father's will in 1758; necessarily of legal age, he
must have been born before 1737. As noted above, he took
part with Thomas in several legal actions to collect debts
owed to the estate of his father. Under the terms of the
will, Reuben inherited part of the original 450-acre grant
lands, between the portions allotted to John and Thomas, and
including the family graveyard. The disposition of this
property is not of record, but if he died without heirs it
was to be divided between John and Thomas. There is,
however, in the will of Alexander Smith , mention of some
land purchased from Reuben Meador. Without the missing
deed, the determination of the location of this property and
the fate of the family burying ground cannot be determined.
euben married Jane Gatewood; this surname seems to have
come from her previous marriage. She had a daughter, Apphia
Gatewood, whom it is believed married (James) Brooks. The
first mention of Jane as wife of Reuben occurred in 1763, in
an action of debt by Reuben . Jane Meador was called upon
by Frances (Phitzsimmons) Meador, wife of (5) William
Meador, to testify to her dying wishes in 1770 .
euben wrote his brief will January 24,1778 and it was
probated September 21 the same year . A poor man, he had
very little property to bequeath. The inventory and
appraisal of his possessions reveals a net worth of only 104
shillings and 6 pence, about the worth of 800 pounds of
tobacco . Apparently there were no children other than
Jane's daughter, Apphia Gatewood Brooks, who was to inherit
any property after the death of her mother. To (6) Thomas
Meador, son of his brother (5) Thomas, he left his gun and
his wearing apparel; but to (6) John Jr., son of his brother
(5) John, he could leave only one shilling sterling.
Nothing more is known as present of Reuben Mead

A son was purportedly born to a daughter of Charibert's Shepherd,
fathered by Charibert. It was said that this child was buried
immediately after birth, but it is possible that he survived and was
merely hidden for safe
