Eleazer was sixteen when he moved with his parents to McDonough County,
Illinois. At 21 he joined the 78th Regiment of Illinois Infantry Co.
C,august 12, 1862. He was captured at Muldraugh's Hill in Kentucky by
General John H. Morgan's Regiment on December 28, 1862. He was paroled
and sent to Benton Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri, returning from
there to Illinois. meanwhile his parents had moved to Mills County,
Iowa. In a short time Eleazer followed, taking a train to Ottumwa,
Iowa and traveling by stagecoach from there to Glenwood.
ere he met Mary "Minnie" Otis, who had a millinary shop in Glenwood.
They were married October 1, 1868, and lived in the Glenwood area until
their first son, Orville, was born.
leazer was an honest, hardworking and successful farmer, acquiring many
acres of farmland in Mills County. About 1909 he and his wife retired
to an acreage in Emerson. Here they raised the fruits, vegetables, and
flowers they both loved. His yard was unusual as he kept his evergreen
