[203]
John, the oldest son of Thomas, was born about 1718, as he
must have been of legal age when he signed as witness to a
deed by his aunt, (5) Rachel Jordan, in 173910 . He
witnessed a deed by his cousin, (5) Susannah Meador, in
1745 . There were several small actions for debt, so he
does not appear to have been well off. Very little else has
been discovered about him; his wife is unknown, and
seemingly lived long enough to bear him only one son.
ohn received a portion of the original 450-acre grant lands
from his father's will in 1758. When he died in 1774, he
left no will. Bond for the administration of his affairs
was granted to Joshua Smother , secure by his son, (6) John
Meador, undoubtedly upon the strength of his inheritance.
The inventory of his estate was small, though not totaled ,
and included a fiddle, probably the same one once owned by
his father.
6) John Meador lived only a few years after his father's
death. He also left no will; his estate included five
slaves, who were only women and children. Except that he
was named by his uncle (5) Reubin Meador in his will,
nothing more is known of him.
n trying to determine what disposal was made of the
property that (4) Thomas left in his will to (5) John, and
which then passed to (6) John Meador, there is one portion
of the 450-acre grant lands that seems still unaccounted
for. In this connection, there is a deed by one Spencer
Meador to Whitehead Coleman for 100 acres "that descended to
Spencer from his deceased father" (who is not named in the
deed) that seems to fit this description . Proof of the
relationship is nowhere to be found, so the connection to
(6) John remains conjectural. However, no other possible
parentage seems likely, as the grounds held by the (4)
Richard Meador descendants are accounted for.
pencer Meador was born before 1774 to be of age sufficient
to make the deed in 1795 mentioned above. His wife was
named Mildred. No further mention of his name has been
found, except for a listing in the 1810 census of Essex
County, where he is shown to have been born between 1765 and
1784, and there are four children, a son 16 to 26, and three
girls less than 10 years old. Nothing further is known at
this writi
