[22] The following article contains numerous errors.
rom his obituary:
Hunting and Fishing Guide "Uncle Bert" Colson dead at 102.
Lontime hunting and fishing guide Lawrence B. "Uncle Bert" Colson, who
would have been 103 on July 7, died Monday after a weeklong struggle
with heart problems. Colson, born in 1877 on a 40 acre farm east of
what is now Brandon, was in relatively good health prior to last week,
according to his niece, Barbara Colson.
"He was very happy, always joking and telling stories," Barbara
Colson said. "He told me the other day he had made his peace with God."
Colson in 1904 married Bessie "ierce, who he claimed was a
descendaant of the family that settled Fort Pierce. He took whatever
jobes he could find - picking oranges, farming, construction, washing
dishes - to support his wife, he said.
For 15 years he worked at the Oldsmar horse track and during the
1930's, he was appointed special policeman for Tampa's park department.
When he reached age 100, Colson was asked how he managed to live so
long. "The doctors tell me the reason I'm here today is because I've
always been a light eater," he said.
Colson's idea of a light meal was a sup of coffee of a glass of mil
and a biscuit or a doughnut or a pice of pork sausage.
Colson more recently said when his wife died in 1972, he was left
alone in the world. The couple had no children and none of his
brothers and sisters were living. In January, 1979, Colson said he was
not afraid to die and sometimes welcomed the idea.
Colson is survived by niece, Lucille Meadows of Hudson,
sister-in-law, Annie Colson; and nephews Albert D. Colson of Riverview
and James Marine of Tampa.
F.T. Blount Funeral Home, Tampa Chapel is handling the arrangements.
End of article.
Now, the primary error is the name of Uncle Bert's wife - it was NOT
Pierce, but Buchanan. His MOTHER was a Pearce, and I believe that the
journalist doing this story got the facts confused.
This obituary is in the possession of Laura Knight-Jadczyk,
great-niece of Uncle Bert and who knew him well.

INDEX

[192] Richard, the oldest son of John and Elizabeth Meador,
apparently was born between 1678 and 1681, as hew was of
sufficient age to make a legal deed in 1702 . Obviously,
he was named for his maternal grandfather, Richard White.
and followed the same occupation, that of "cooper" or maker
of tobacco casks, though later he identified himself as a
"planter" . Richard Meador is first mentioned in a deed of
gift by Abraham Coombes in October, 1683 . In that deed,
Coombes recounts that he had given a heifer to his godson
(and nephew) John Meador, grandson of Ambrose Meador; but as
the said John Meador ha died in infancy, the gift (now two
cows and two calves) was to go to the said John's sister,
Mary. If she died, the gift was to go to Richard Meador,
son of John Meador of Rappahannock County.
t is interesting to note that one witness to this deed of
gift was Henry Awbrey, husband of Sarah Awbrey, who
presumably was also Richard's grandmother, Sarah Meador,
widow of (2) Thomas Meador.
ichard would have grown up on the 450-acre plantation of
his father on Hoskins Creek. At the age of 18 or 20, and
before July, 1698, Richard married Ann Moss, daughter of
John Moss . In July. 1698, Richard and Ann made bond for
the faithful administration of her father's estate, of which
she had been named executrix. Four years later they sold
the 100 acres of land left to her by her father's will ,
and in this deed she is identified as the daughter of John
Moss.
3) John Meador in 1694 made a deed of gift to his
children by his first wife in which Richard and his brother
(4) John Jr. were to receive jointly all of John's tract of
land on the west side of the "Great Branch", to be divided
between them as (3) John saw fit. Because in the same gift
John Allotted to his son Hope a tract later identified as
containing 150 acres, it would appear logical to expect that
these elder sons received at least that amount. Richard, as
the oldest son, possibly received slightly more than the
others.
his deed of gift made by John in 1694 contained two
provisions which undoubtedly affected later disposition of
the land; possibly without record being made of such
disposition. The first provision was: "The land given unto
my sons and daughters never to be sold nor disposed of, but
to remaine from heir to heir as long as there can be found
one of ye Meadors found alive". The second provision was:
"If it be ye Lard's will to call any of my sons or daughters
before me and any of them shall sye before me, ye land of ye
deed to return to me again to my disposing".
vailable records would indicate that by the time John made
the above mentioned deed, he must have acquired a total of
1095 acres of land on Hoskins Creek. This does not include
the 320-acre grant, which had been sold previously . It is
not clear whether John retained some of the land for himself
at the time of the deed of gift; but it can be seen that if
he gave each of the four sons only 150 acres apiece, and
gave the daughters a total of 405 acres, some 90 acres would
still remain unaccounted for. The amount of land bequeathed
in the will of John Meador in 1721 is not specified; nor is
there any clear-cut record of the ultimate disposal of the
lands bequeathed. Nevertheless, from the will itself it
would appear that, of the children by John's first marriage,
only Thomas, Rachel Jordan, and Elizabeth Armstrong remained
alive at the time of John's death. By the provisions of the
deed of gift of 1694, the lands deeded to Richard, John Jr.,
Hope and Esther Bourne, should have reverted back to (3)
John for his further disposition, of which we have found no
record.
onetheless, it would appear that (4) Richard and/or his
heirs received most of those lands originally deeded to
Richard, as well as lands given to Hope and Esther
Bourne . It appears possible also that in some manner
Richard acquired the land originally deeded to Elizabeth
Armstrong . The probable amount of land involved in the
referenced deed and the meager description of the tract
sounds very much like the land of Elizabeth Armstrong. Yet,
in the view of the fact that the deed of gift specifically
prohibited sale of that land to outsiders, and that both
John Meador and Elizabeth Armstrong were still living when
Richard and Ann sold the land to Joseph Humphrey, it would
appear possible that the land involved in this deed was not
that originally allotted to Elizabeth Armstrong, but rather
from the estate of John Moss, of which Ann was executrix.
nother point that should be brought out at this juncture is
that under the law of primogeniture then in effect Richard,
as the oldest son, was entitled to first inheritance in the
property of his father, and some of the ensuing deeds seem
to reflect this proprietary right.
ichard Meador was appointed Constable by the Essex County
Court, but asked to be relieved of that duty in 1709 . In
1710 he was security for the administration of the estate of
Edward Bramham and later signed the inventory .
t is brought home to us how short the life span could be in
those early Colonial days when it is seen that Richard was
only about 35 years old when he felt the approach of death.
He made his will December 12,1715, and it was presented by
his widow for probate May 15,1716 . In this will he left
the plantation where he lived on the south side of Hoskins
Creek to his wife, Ann. This was presumably the portion
given to him by his father.
n the inventory made following his death. we gain some
insight into the daily life and pursuits of Richard Meador.
Included was a set of "Truper's Arms", though just what
armament this entailed in not specified. While every
settler had a gun for self-preservation against the Indians,
this must have included additional items. Certainly there
was a musket, cartridge box or powder horn, bullet molds,
and other items. Listed also were two saddles, a parcel of
books (rare for that day), a pair of silver buckles, two
felt hats, some shoemaker's tools, lasts, and thread, for a
total value of 63 pounds sterling. It was a modest, average
amount.
n the will we learn for the first time the names of some of
Richard's children, of whom there were at least two sons and
two daughters. The eldest son, (5) William, was to inherit
the plantation after the death of his mother. The youngest
son, (5) Richard, was given the remaining 100 acres of his
great-grandfather White's lands on the North side of Hoskins
Creek, after the deaths of (4) Esther and her husband,
William Bourne. If (5) Richard should die, then the 100
acres was to go to his "youngest sister Addra". This
daughter of (4) Richard and Ann apparently was named for the
great-grandmother, Addra White. We are not privileged to
learn the names of other children from this will or other
records. Widow Ann married secondly to James Bradbury, and
her signature as witness is found on the will of (3) John
Meador in 1721 and that of John Meador, Jr. in 1720. She
apparently died before 1728, and there is no will of reco
